Mentoring Program

The mentoring program supports recently registered migration agents. Its aim is to assist new members of the profession to bridge the gap between formal qualification for registration and successful practice as migration advisors. Successful mentoring is a continuous learning experience that focuses on instruction, coaching, modelling and advising. New agents can engage in an ongoing series of events ranging from mentoring days to one-on-one placements within a variety of business settings.

A unique real-time and online Small Model Office project is being developed to provide recently registered agents with genuine client-based practical experience. The MIA’s partnership with Victoria University in the delivery of its Practical Migration Training is another exciting mentoring initiative in 2010.

Immigration Essentials for Lawyers

The Centre runs workshops covering essential topics for lawyers wishing to provide migration advice. It is an opportunity to learn the visa types, review procedures and practical tips from Accredited Specialists in Immigration Law and experienced migration professionals. While no prior knowledge of immigration law is required, participants must hold a legal practising certificate to enrol in the course.

Support Staff of Registered Migration Agents

This new course will be added to the program for 2010 to train support staff in the key areas of their role. The training program will be run by the Centre in conjunction with other educational institutions. The course will include an overview of the role of support staff within a migration agent’s practice, the basics of migration law and visa types, issues surrounding client confidentiality, file keeping and account management, the roles of DIAC, the Office of the MARA, the MRT and other industry bodies, and communicating with people from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
